INTRODUCTION
In 1985, Congress passed amendments to the Animal Welfare
Act that directed the Animal Plant and Health Inpection Service
(APHIS) to promulgate regulations that provide for the
psychological well-being of nonhuman primates. In February 1991,
the USDA/APHIS issued a final ruling which states:
Dealers, exhibitors, and research facilities must develop,
document and follow an appropriate plan for environment
enhancement adequate to promote the psychological well-being of
nonhuman primates. The plan must be in accordance with the
currently accepted professional standards as cited in appropriate
professional journals or reference guides, and as directed by the
attending veterinarian.-Applied ethologists and stress
physiologists recognize that a variety of indicators are
necessary to assess an animal's psychological well-being.
Indicators such as glucocorticoid levels, responses to preference
tests and motivational challenges, immunosuppression, genetic
expression, social behavior, and self-directed behaviors such as
stereotypies and self-mutilation have opened a window into
understanding the needs of the animals in their own language.
Observations by field ethologists and laboratory biologists have
paved the way for a better understanding of the ultimate and
proximate causation of behaviors seen in captivity. While some
order-specific generalizations can be made, available research
indicates that psychological well-being is also species specific
and varies between individuals based upon experience and
genetics. To meet the mandate that psychological needs be
addressed, there has been a proliferation of facility designs,
enrichment devices, and programs for captive nonhuman primates.
The literature cited in the bibliography section reflects such
research and suggests that well-being encompasses more than a
clean environment, good physical health, and successful
reproduction. -U.S. Department of Agriculture. Animal and Plant
Health Inspection Service. 9CFR Part 3: Animal Welfare Standards;

HOW TO USE THIS DOCUMENT
BIBLIOGRAPHIC SECTIONS
General and Taxonomic Sections
Citations are categorized according to the subject of the
article. Articles that address specific species are categorized
taxonomically and may be cross-referenced in one of the general
sections. Although an effort has been made to ensure that
articles are unique to each section, there is considerable
overlap due to the scope of the individual articles. The user is
advised to consult several sections including species-specific
sections when searching for a particular topic due to overlap.
For example, articles about enrichment devices and programs
developed for chimpanzees are found in the species specific
Chimpanzee section as well as the Facility Design/Development,
Plans/Programs, Enrichment Techniques and Devices sections when
the article may cover a range of species. Conversely,
articles about enrichment strategies are not limited to the
Plans/Programs section.
Species specific strategies are included in species sections.
Call numbers are included for publications contained in the
collection of the National Agricultural Library. Audiovisuals
are indicated by () in the margin to the left of the citation.
Suppliers of enrichment devices are mentioned in articles
that refer to their development or use.
Bibliographies and Monographs Sections
Much of the pre-1987 literature is included in the
Bibliographies section although each was compiled after 1986.
Pre-1987 literature is also frequently cited in more recent
articles and provide a valuable resource too vast to be
considered in this document.
The Monographs section features books that include
environmental enrichment for nonhuman primates in general.
RESOURCE SECTIONS
Serial and Primate Information Resources Sections
The Serial section contains 67 regularly published serials
that regularly contain articles on enrichment from diverse
perspectives within the scientific community. This list is
international in scope.
Resources in the Resource Section are derived from
organization directories, telephone interviews, and expert
recommendations. Organizations are listed alphabetically and
separated in North American and European subsections. Type of
organization, contact, services and resources provided, fees, and
priority requestor type are included.
