However, the citations are a substantial resource for recent investigations on a given topic. They also serve the purpose of bringing the literature of agriculture to the interested user who, in many cases, could not access it by any other means. The bibliographies are derived from computerized on- line searches of the AGRICOLA data base. Timeliness of topic and evidence of extensive interest are the selection criteria. The author/searcher determines the purpose, length, and search strategy of the Quick Bibliography. Information regarding these is available upon request from the author/searcher. Copies of this bibliography may be made or used for distribution without prior approval. The inclusion or omission of a particular publication or citation may not be construed as endorsement or disapproval. Language: English Descriptors: Man; Sheep; Fetal growth; Nutrition physiology; Placental hormones Abstract: This review compared the similarities and differences of fetal growth mechanisms between humans and sheep. Growth of the fetus at any time resulted from the balance between its inherent growth drive, which was reflected by its demands for nutrients and the limits imposed on the supply of substrates by placental size and maternal nutritional state. Consequently, it was concluded that anabolic processes concerned with growth of the placenta, fetus, mammary gland, and lactogenesis must be supported by adequate supplies of nutrients, because deficiencies in nutrient supply for these crucial activities could jeopardize the well-being of the fetus. 218 NAL Call. Language: English Descriptors: Lamb (meat); Beef; Food packaging; Vacuum packaging; Storage life; Oxygen; Carbon dioxide; Controlled atmosphere storage; Food preservation; Food quality Abstract: A packaging system for greatly extending the storage life of chilled red meat is described. Development of the fully commercial system required the active involvement of three groups, individually having specialised knowledge of meat science, packaging technology or meat production and marketing. The system uses equipment and packaging materials that assure the establishment and maintenance of an oxygen-free CO2 atmosphere around product, the atmosphere being established without stressing the product or packaging. Meat of good hygienic quality packed in the system can be stored at the optimum chiller temperature without spoilage for up to six months. During that time, the product retains a good appearance and desirable eating qualities. Meat in any form, from whole carcasses to minces, is preserved equally effectively in the system. It is likely that the system can be applied for prolonged storage of a wide range of chilled products other than red meat. 224 NAL Call. Language: English Descriptors: Ewes; Lactating females; Prolactin; Thyrotropin releasing hormone; Pituitary Abstract: In order to determine whether pituitary prolactin release was directly related to the secretion of TRH into hypophysial portal blood, serial portal and jugular venous blood samples were collected from seven lactating and three non-lactating ewes. In another experiment, samples were collected from five ovariectomized ewes while being exposed to an audio-visual stress and then later administered with chlorpromazine. Secretion of TRH was pulsatile in all ewes and independent of prolactin secretion; TRH pulses coincided with significant increases in prolactin secretion in only 15% of cases and only 29% of prolactin pulses were associated with TRH pulses. Sixty-seven per cent of suckling bouts were associated with increases in prolactin secretion, but only 22% of these were associated with significant increases in TRH secretion. Chlorpromazine increased prolactin levels fourfold but did not affect portal concentrations of TRH. Audio-visual stress was not a reliable method of causing prolactin release in this model. Mean portal concentrations of TRH and jugular concentrations of prolactin were not significantly correlated. These results show that hypothalamic TRH and pituitary prolactin are secreted independently in the sheep, implying that increases in prolactin release caused by suckling or chlorpromazine are not the direct result of increased TRH secretion. 254 NAL Call. Language: English Descriptors: USA; Livestock; Supply; Models; Methodology Abstract: Extract: This report documents the theoretical background and the statistical structure of the U.S. livestock supply component that will become part of the U.S. country model in the IIASA (International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis) linkage system, a world wide modeling system created by the Institute in Austria. The methodological framework of the estimated statistical models is presented in Section I, where the literature on the capital asset approach to livestock modeling is reviewed and its implications explored. Section II deals with the empirical estimates of the following components of livestock supply: beef (including veal), dairy, pork, lamb and sheep (including wool production); and poultry (including eggs and turkey). It also discusses the empirical estimates of feed demand of corn, barley, sorghum, oats, wheat, roughage and hay, soybean meal and all other oilseed meals. Finally, in Section III, the dynamic properties of livestock supply are described and their implications explored. 316 NAL Call.
