SPECIAL REFERENCE BRIEFS SALMONELLOSIS IN LABORATORY ANIMALS ----------------------------------- NAL SRB 89-01 October 1988 Prepared by: Kevin Engler Animal Welfare Information Center (301) 344-3212 United States Department of Agriculture National Agricultural Library Beltsville, MD 20705 *********************************************************************** TABLE OF CONTENTS PAGE INTRODUCTION............................................... i SALMONELLOSIS IN LABORATORY ANIMALS........................ 1-15 AUTHOR INDEX............................................... 15-19 (i) INTRODUCTION Salmonellosis is a disease of major importance to both humans and animals. It occurs worldwide and its incidence is on the increase due to growing human populations, intensifying animal production and increasing antibiotic resistance. Salmonella can infect a wide range of animals including mammals, birds, reptiles, fish, amphibians, and insects. Salmonellosis may range from an asymptomatic carrier state to a fatal disease with overt clinical signs. It can cause increased morbidity and mortality, as well as decreased breeding productivity. Salmonella are non-spore-forming, usually motile, gram- negative bacilli of the family Enterobacteriaceae. They are primarily parasites of the intestine but may be isolated from other organs and blood. The principal species pathogenic to animals are Salmonella enteritidis, which is divided into over 1700 serotypes, and Salmonella typhimurium, the species most commonly isolated from infected animals. The disease is characterized by any combination of 3 syndromes - septicemia, and acute and chronic enteritis. While some species of the bacteria are more pathogenic in certain animals than in others, the ability of the host to resist infection may also be influenced by age, nutrition, stress and the presence of concurrent diseases. Contaminated food, water, and fomites are common sources of infection. Bacterial isolation from vomitus, feces, organ tissues, and body fluids can confirm the existence of salmonellosis. Treatment is commonly fluid therapy and/or antibiotic therapy, though the use of antimicrobials for salmonellosis is controversial. The primary focus of this Special Reference Brief (SRB) is on various aspects of salmonellosis in common laboratory animals (i.e. guinea pig, rat, mouse, rabbit, cat, dog, and primate). Some references to farm animals in laboratory settings are included, however. The cited documents cover a wide range of topics related to salmonellosis including sources of infection, transmission, vectors, incidence, etiology, pathogenicity, resistance, zoonosis, treatment, and control. This SRB includes citations from 1978 to 1987 and is organized chronologically, with the most recent citations first. Foreign language materials were not excluded. Although some documents are not held by the National Agricultural Library (NAL), all citations containing the NAL call number are available directly from NAL or through interlibrary loan. *For additional information contact: National Agricultural Library Animal Welfare Information Center (AWIC) Room 301 Beltsville, MD 20705 (301) 344-3212 ===================================================================== SALMONELLOSIS IN LABORATORY ANIMALS 1 001 "Mechanisms of acquired resistance in mouse typhoid."
