INTRODUCTION

For individuals who are not familiar with the number of contributions poultry have made to biomedical research, a review of the literature may be surprising. Chickens, turkeys, and ducks are used as models for studying atherosclerosis, hypertension, and cholesterol metabolism. Certain stocks of ducks and chickens spontaneously develop muscular dystrophy with pathological features similar to muscular dystrophy in humans. Poultry are also used in bone development, pathology, and surgical studies. In addition, avians are susceptible to several viruses that result in tumors in body tissues. This has made poultry a model of interest to virologists involved in cancer research and vaccine development. Chickens continue to play a strong role in the understanding of vitamin and trace element metabolism. The avian egg offers a mechanism for studying embryonic development and pathology in a highly detailed and accessible manner. The chick embryo has served as a model for investigating normal cell differentiation, human neural tube defects, fetal alcohol syndrome, and other developmental and teratogenic conditions. The visual system of chickens has been studied as a model for glaucoma, cataract formation, hereditary blindness, and cell development. A variety of pharmacokinetic studies use poultry as experimental animals for testing cardiovascular, antiepileptic, anticoccidial, antiinflammatory, and antidepressant agents.

There are several advantages to using poultry as biomedical models. One, chickens, turkeys and ducks are precocial birds that are capable of adapting to a variety of farm and laboratory environments. Two, compared to traditional laboratory species, such as the cat, dog, or rabbit, chickens are inexpensive to purchase and maintain (personal communication). Three, if birds are obtained from university flocks, reputable hatcheries, breeders, or laboratory animal suppliers, information regarding the birds genetic background and health status should be readily available. This of particular importance for researchers using chickens, since chickens genetically selected for high egg production may respond differently to experimental conditions than those selected for meat production. Fourth, researchers using poultry as biomedical models have the benefit of conducting research with a species in which a wealth of agriculture literature is available, particularly in the fields of nutrition, immunology, genetics, and husbandry.

The following document was designed as an information resource for primary investigators, graduate students, laboratory animal personnel, and others who have an interest in poultry as a biomedical model. The first three sections of the bibliography-- books and proceedings, journals, and bibliographies-- are listed to provide general sources of information on avian anatomy, physiology, pathology, and welfare. The next sections include specific systems and fields of research in which poultry are used as models including: cardiovascular system; muscular/skeletal system; urinary system, renal, kidney; nervous system; immunology; nutrition; liver; pancreas; genetics; dermatology; pharmacodynamics; toxicology; developmental studies; vision; audiology; and behavior. In the behavior section, papers are included on fear, pain, handling, and stress. These are issues of importance in designing experiments with poultry. In addition, a section is included on "welfare and husbandry" in which papers, books, proceedings, and bibliographies concerning the housing, well being, and husbandry guidelines are listed. Citations from materials that are present in the collection of the National Agricultural Library have been assigned a NAL call number. Citations are arranged in chronological order from the most to the least recent.

The author would like to acknowledge the thoughtful comments and suggestions from reviewers Dr's. Joy Mench and Paul Siegel. A grateful thank you is extended to my coworkers Jennifer Lyons-Carter and Katy Schull for their hours spent entering and editing citations. I also thank Dr. Kathy Nepote for her practical comments regarding special considerations of housing poultry in laboratory settings.
