============================================================================= Internet / Bitnet Mailing Lists (LISTSERV's) ============================================================================= LISTSERV's or electronic mailing lists allow people with special interests to form electronic discussion groups for asking questions, providing answers, discussions, announcements, etc. Anyone with an e-mail account may join most mailing lists. Most lists have owner(s) who moderate the list and set the rules of conduct. The majority of communication on a mailing list is personal communication with other members of the list rather than the Listserv machine itself. When an e-mail message is sent to the list by a participant, the Listserv machine stores a permanent copy in an archive and the message is forwarded to all other participants on the list. In this manner, it is possible for list participants to communicate to the entire group at once, with geographic and time barriers removed. Resolving problems among many people is an attractive feature of this form of communication. Groups with common interests can exchange information in an efficient, timely manner. The volume of e-mail varies from list to list, with some having maybe a couple of messages a week, and others with many messages in a day. *NOTE* Most electronic mailing lists support the standard BITNET convention of subscription, i.e., sending e-mail to an administrative machine named listserv@server and in the body of the message including the phrase: subscribe listname yourfirstname yourlastname. Other lists do not follow this convention of subscription and must be accessed otherwise, as noted below. For a typical list (using vetmed-l as an example), to join, you would issue the following subscription command in the "body" of the message (NOT the Subject): subscribe vetmed-l John Doe to the administrative machine: listserv@uga (if you're using a Bitnet node) or listserv@uga.cc.uga.edu (if you're using an Internet node). Mail messages posted to the list would subsequently be sent (as in this example) to the listname, e.g., vetmed-l@uga (Bitnet) or vetmed-l@uga.cc.uga.edu (Internet). For convenience, when lists are available from either Bitnet or Internet, I have listed both addresses. There are gateways between the two networks which should do the translation for you somewhere along the line; it just depends on where you're subscribing from. There may be some local variation on the format needed to send mail to Bitnet or Internet addresses. Check with your local computer support people. Note that in almost all instances, the network address you use to subscribe to a list is DIFFERENT from the address you would subsequently use to send mail. Any other administrative commands, SIGNOFF, REVIEW, etc., should be sent to the LISTSERV address, and NOT to the mailing list address. Detailed documentation on LISTSERV, and related services, is available from: LISTSERV@BITNIC (Bitnet) or LISTSERV@BITNIC.EDUCOM.EDU (Internet). European mail-readers can obtain similar information from LISTSERV@EARNCC.BITNET. For a list of available documents send the command: INDEX DOC in the body of an e-mail message, to one of listservers mentioned above. LISTSERV@EARN-RELAY.AC.UK is a server that mirrors most of the U.S. Bitnet LISTSERV lists in Europe. Some of the mailing lists below, although available and active, are restricted to professional participants only. These will be pointed out in the individual list descriptions. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- AAVI American Academy of Veterinary Informatics Internet Subscribe to: ken@wudcm.wustl.edu Internet Mail to: aavi@aalas.org Description: Discussion and proceedings of the American Academy of Veterinary Informatics. This definition may be expanded to include AI-based approaches to computer-assisted medical instruction. According to this definition, topics such as billing systems and hospital/medical office information retrieval systems clearly remain outside the scope of this forum. A medical informatics mailing list exists for the discussion of such topics. There are some borderline topics which cannot readily be classified under AI in Medicine, yet have clear connections to both artificial intelligence and medical practice. Processing and interpretation of medical images and signals are among those subject areas. Subject areas should remain within the scope of the list, as long as the focus lies on the artificial intelligence aspects, and not the detailed engineering principles. Postings ranging from care and feeding of your household 'pooch' to scientific research concerning any aspect of wild or domestic canine populations are welcome. If you wish to discuss training, human-canine psi experiences, dog "ghosts", seek a bit of comfort over the loss of a cherished dog, or find the best way to handle any aspect of dog ownership, you may reasonably expect to be welcome on CANINE-L. Managers and Administrators of any institution maintaining a canine population, such as zoos, game parks or research installations may discuss mutual problems and points of interest here. Graphic discussion of research techniques may be inappropriate for this list and offensive to some subscribers. Use good taste in what you post. Reasonable discussion of conservation and environmental issues, as they specifically relate to canine populations, are welcome here. The same holds true for almost any aspect of canine veterinary care and management. In short, absolutely anything that may reasonably be seen to have a relationship to canines and/or to human-canine interactions may be posted here... with one or two exceptions. This is not the place for campaigning for animal rights, debating the ethics of maintaining pets, pleading generalized environmental cases not directly bearing on a canine population, arguing the pros and cons of vegetarianism or any similarly tangential topics. This is, first and foremost, a place for people who love dogs. Any kind of dogs. List Owner/Contact: W.K. The discussion is scientific, multidisciplinary, and academic. Topics include: o behavioral aspects of neuroanatomy and neurophysiology; o biological aspects of particular sets of behaviors; o the neuropsychology of ecology, ethology, genetics, ontogeny, endocrinology, info. theory, and pharmacology; o books, papers, research directions, and new results; o new imaging, simulation, and measurement techniques; o curricula, graduate programs, jobs, zeitgeist, and funding. "Behavior" above is an attempt at a theory-independent, catch-all term for cognition, emotion, volition, and meaningful action in humans and other animals, both normal and abnormal, including subjective reports. Since that is a lot of territory to cover, primary emphasis tends to be: o on science (measurable phenomena) more than philosophy, o on the field itself more than its implications, and o on approaching particular natural phenomena from many perspectives rather than approaching many phenomena from a particular perspective or technique. For more details about the Cognitive Neuroscience Mailing List, including how to subscribe, how to get archives, and guidelines, please send email to me at: cogneuro-request@ptolemy.arc.nasa.gov with something closely resembling "cogneuro: send info" in the subject line, and I will reply manually with the latest information. Heen-list is a forum for professional anthropologists, primatologists, biologists, and others to share information on how they, as professionals, can use their experience and education as a resource for educators and young students in their areas. The list can particularly benefit from having members of different experience levels; some HEEN members have worked extensively in the schools, and others are curious about how they could become involved. Like the HEEN Newsletter _Missing Link_, heen-list is for you to share your ideas, successes, and frustrations. Not only can you be a resource for schools, you can be a resource for your colleagues as well. Heen-list is non-automated; you will not receive immediate confirmation of you subscription, but your name and address will be added to heen-list within a few days of your subscription message. Let us know your name and e-mail address. Since it is non-automated, the format doesn't matter much. Also, please let us know if you would like to be added to the _Missing Link_ newsletter mailing list. Such populations are very complex systems, exhibiting a variety of phenomena that we still do not master. Just to quote a famous example, multiannual density cycles (e.g. in lemmings) have not received a satisfactory explanation, despite of decades of debated studies and speculations. Population Biology is a very active field, encompassing such diverse approaches as tenacious, harsh field work to track long term demographic and genetic fluctuations, or sophisticated conversations with a computer about strange attractors possibly causing chaos in the density fluctuations. It is hoped that the forum will act as a bridge between those taking a biomedical viewpoint of the study and treatment of psychopathology, and those taking a more existential or psychodynamic viewpoint.
